Job Description
Position Title: Insurance Bad Faith Defense Attorney
A specialized carrier-defense practice is building out its California team and needs an attorney who has worked bad faith defense from the start of a career, not general insurance defense. The caseload consists of high-exposure coverage and bad faith matters for major national carriers, with new matters arriving every month and roughly 45 to 50 active cases at any time. Attorneys here handle motions, court appearances, and depositions early, experience that larger firms rarely offer at the same stage.
The practice runs with the discipline of a large firm and the autonomy of a small one. Work is not micromanaged and is not rewritten after submission. The team is available to teach and help, and merit is rewarded through discretionary bonuses, early compensation review, and a share of fees on any client the attorney brings in. The position is fully remote, which suits attorneys who want to leave a heavy big-firm billing schedule without leaving sophisticated work behind.
Salary Range: $200,000 – $300,000 / Year DOE
Plus a discretionary merit-based bonus, and a percentage of monthly fees on clients the attorney originates.
Insurance Bad Faith Defense Attorney Responsibilities
- Defend insurance carriers in coverage and bad faith actions, including breach of contract, bad faith, and punitive damages claims
- Manage high-exposure matters for large national carriers and their subsidiaries
- Work each case alongside a partner, with senior leadership providing oversight and guidance
- Take on as much as capacity allows, including motions, court appearances, and depositions
- Prepare cases for trial, which the firm’s trial partners then try
- Draft and format your own work product, with a paralegal supporting formatting and filing
- Maintain your own calendar in Clio and own deadlines and follow-through
- Bill 2,000 or more hours annually
Insurance Bad Faith Defense Attorney Requirements
- Five or more years of insurance bad faith defense experience is required, ideally five to ten years. A background that began in bad faith defense rather than standard insurance defense is preferred, not required
- Experience defending carriers in coverage and bad faith actions
- Active California bar admission
- Strong writing ability and a genuine interest in writing, with writing samples required
- This role is fully remote. West Coast locations are workable, with Los Angeles, Orange County, or San Diego preferred for in-person depositions and hearings. Residency in these areas is not required
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of matters, and meet a 2,000 or more hour annual billing expectation
Benefits
- Fully remote work arrangement
- Medical coverage with a substantial employer contribution toward employee premiums
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Flexible time off, provided work and hours are completed
- Bar dues and continuing education paid
- Discretionary merit-based bonus and early compensation review
- Opportunity to build a book of business, with a potential partner title depending on experience
Attorneys with bad faith defense experience, strong writing skills, and an interest in building a book of business are encouraged to apply today for a remote role defending major national carriers.
