Position Title: Director of Acquisitions
The Director of Acquisitions plays a crucial role in leading strategic efforts in acquiring fine art, antiques, jewelry, and luxury collectibles. This position demands a visionary leader with extensive industry knowledge, exceptional analytical skills, and a well-established network. The individual will identify, evaluate, negotiate, and secure acquisition opportunities that align with the company’s growth strategy while maintaining its reputation as a premier destination for collectors and enthusiasts. The ideal candidate will navigate a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and engage in high-stakes negotiations. This role offers the opportunity to significantly impact the company’s success and establish a strong pipeline of high-value acquisitions.
Director of Acquisitions Responsibilities:
- Build a structured and proactive acquisitions pipeline
- Increase access to top-tier inventory across categories
- Develop and implement acquisition strategies aligned with company goals
- Identify and evaluate high-value acquisition opportunities in multiple categories
- Forecast market trends to capitalize on emerging demand
- Build and maintain strong relationships with collectors, dealers, consignors, advisors, estates, and galleries
- Represent the business at auctions, fairs, private sales, and industry events
- Cultivate a pipeline of prospective opportunities through networking, research, and outreach
- Lead thorough due diligence including provenance, condition, valuation, and authentication
- Assess financial, historical, and market data to inform acquisition decisions
- Coordinate with internal specialists and external experts where applicable
- Lead negotiations with sellers, agents, and intermediaries
- Ensure terms meet company standards for quality, margin, and risk
- Manage documentation and collaborate with legal and finance teams for transaction completion
- Communicate acquisition strategy, opportunities, and outcomes to senior leadership
- Partner with sales, marketing, and operations to optimize post-acquisition success
- Increase in acquisition of museum-quality, high-margin, and high-demand works
- Development of a consistent, visible pipeline of high-value opportunities (including off-market deals)
- Strong buying discipline resulting in favorable purchase terms and profitability
- Strategic attendance and participation in top fairs, auctions, and industry events—resulting in meaningful business opportunities
- Successful rollout of structured acquisition workflows, reporting, and cross-functional communication
Director of Acquisitions Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Business, Finance, or related field is required
- 8+ years of experience in acquisitions, art markets, luxury goods, or related fields is required
- Track record of successful acquisitions and strong industry reputation is required
- Demonstrated success sourcing, negotiating, and closing high-value acquisitions across fine art, antiques, jewelry, or luxury collectibles is required
- Strong network of industry contacts and proven deal-making capabilities is required
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, and strategic planning skills are required
- Deep, working knowledge of global art, antiques, and luxury collectibles markets is required
- Strategic thinker with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments is required
- Ability to assess risk, value, and opportunity in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment is required
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, complex transactions, and competing deadlines simultaneously is required
- A rare combination of connoisseurship and data-driven thinking is required
- Advanced art history or similar degree is preferred
