Job Description

Position Title: Head of Estimating

The Head of Estimating plays a crucial role in leading and managing the estimating team, ensuring the precise and timely completion of quotes that align with customer specifications. This position requires collaboration with sales and clients to develop detailed cost estimates based on drawings and proposals. The Head of Estimating will also serve as a key liaison between internal teams and customers to facilitate project success. The role demands a strong understanding of steel fabrication and machining processes, along with the ability to effectively communicate with various stakeholders. Challenges include adapting to established practices and balancing leadership responsibilities with hands-on estimating tasks.

Head of Estimating Responsibilities:

  • Set goals for the estimating team and prioritize actions to achieve those goals
  • Organize and assign tasks to meet deadlines
  • Collaborate with Sales Managers to develop Requests for Quotes in a timely manner
  • Communicate with and motivate the estimating team while evaluating job performance
  • Review and confirm the accuracy of the estimating team’s work
  • Engage with customers to verify requirements and specifications
  • Formulate estimates from proposals and blueprints, including bill of materials and labor hours
  • Work concurrently on multiple projects with other estimators
  • Act as a liaison between internal teams and customers
  • Support team members while managing bids and estimating projects

Head of Estimating Requirements:

  • 5+ years of recent experience as an Estimator with a focus on fabrication and machining
  • Thorough understanding of steel fabricating and machining processes
  • Customer-facing experience with effective communication skills for vendor negotiations
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals, including executives and clients
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience in procurement and cost estimation, including material sourcing and vendor bid evaluation
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet goals, budgets, and deadlines
  • Strong background in RFQ, RFP, blueprint reading, and budget creation
  • Experience with heavy machining and fabrication shop experience is preferred
  • Engineering background or degree is preferred
