Job Description
Position Title: Controller
The Controller plays a pivotal role in managing the financial operations and accounting functions of a law firm focused on contingency cases. This position requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in accounting, specifically within the legal sector. The Controller will oversee a team while ensuring compliance with financial regulations and maintaining accuracy in financial reporting. Challenges include navigating the complexities of contingency billing and managing payroll processes. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate strong organizational skills. Salary Range: $200,000 – $250,000 / Year DOE
Controller Responsibilities:
- Direct all accounting functions including billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
- Prepare monthly and year-end financial reports and manage the financial processes
- Coordinate external audit materials and financial reporting
- Prepare annual budgets and monitor financial performance
- Manage trust account activities and ensure compliance with financial controls
- Oversee payroll processes and benefits administration
- Lead accounting staff, providing training and development opportunities
- Participate in strategic planning and process improvements
- Manage firm operations and physical facilities
- Act as the point of contact for new case setups and accounting projects
Controller Requirements:
- At least 7 years of accounting experience with a minimum of 5 years as a Controller
- 5 years of experience in a law firm on the plaintiff side, with knowledge of contingency billing
- Experience with online/web-based accounting software and QuickBooks
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookups
- Knowledge of state and jurisdictional tax laws, particularly California and New York
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Legal Manager (CLM) is preferred
- SHRM or equivalent certification is preferred
