Job Description

A rapidly growing behavioral and mental health services provider is hiring a hands-on Controller to clean up the general ledger, lead a complex consolidation across 8–9 EINs, and drive the transition from cash to accrual accounting. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role owns the close, strengthens controls, modernizes processes, and brings order and clarity to a rapidly growing, mission-driven healthcare organization. They are looking for a proactive, collaborative accounting leader who knows healthcare, thrives in ambiguity, and takes ownership without ego.

Salary Range: $120,000 – $150,000/ Year DOE

Controller Responsibilities:

  • Own and clean up the general ledger, ensuring accuracy across multiple entities and company files
  • Lead consolidation for 8-9 EINs and streamline bank account structures
  • Drive and manage the transition from cash to accrual-based accounting
  • Oversee monthly close, including income statements, balance sheets, and reconciliations
  • Build, document, and enforce month-end policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Supervise and mentor two bookkeepers and support hiring an additional accountant
  • Oversee accounting approval for two payroll cycles per month (600+ employees via ADP)
  • Manage cash flow, banking activity, and liquidity across $15M–$20M monthly volume
  • Streamline AP, AR, cost-center accounting, and departmental reporting
  • Improve financial reporting, dashboards, and operational visibility using Excel and PowerBI
  • Partner closely with the CFO on scale, change management, and future growth initiatives

Controller Requirements:

  • 7+ years of GAAP accounting experience within healthcare
  • Proven experience transitioning organizations from cash to accrual accounting
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Strong consolidation experience across multiple entities/EINs
  • Advanced Excel skills: pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, macros
  • Prior supervisory or people-management experience
  • Accounting system experience required
  • QuickBooks exposure a plus
  • Comfortable working onsite five days per week in San Diego
  • Self-starter who operates independently without hand-holding
  • Healthcare revenue exposure tied to Medicaid, DHCS, ECM, or community-based services preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • ERP implementation or system-transition experience preferred
  • M&A or integration experience preferred

Benefits:

  • Discretionary annual bonus potential 10-20% based on performance
  • Annual reviews and raises tied to clear KPIs
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with safe harbor contribution
  • 10 paid holidays + PTO + 40 hours of front-loaded sick time
  • Referral bonuses, employee discounts, life and disability coverage, FSA options
  • Strong leadership stability, high retention, and a real long-term growth opportunity

This role is ideal for a seasoned Accounting Manager or Controller who wants ownership, impact, and growth without politics. If you bring healthcare accounting depth, operational discipline, and a collaborative leadership style, this is a chance to step into a high-visibility role and help shape the financial foundation of a rapidly expanding organization.
