Job Description
A Chicago-based accounting and advisory firm is hiring a Tax Manager to lead complex client work, mentor a small team, and partner directly with firm leadership on high-value tax and advisory engagements. You will oversee returns for closely held businesses and high-net-worth individuals, manage client relationships, and help shape how the firm continues to grow. They are looking for a seasoned public accounting professional who wants stability, influence, and a long-term home.
Salary Range: $150,000 – $175,000 / Year DOE
Tax Manager Responsibilities:
- Lead and review preparation of complex tax returns, including 1040s, C-corps, S-corps and nonprofits
- Serve as the primary point of contact for high-value, closely held business clients
- Work with partners on tax planning, compliance, and strategic advisories
- Oversee and support a team of approximately 10 staff and seniors
- Track deadlines and workflow to ensure timely delivery during busy seasons
- Coordinate with attorneys and outside advisors on trust, estate, and investment matters
- Assist with audits, accounting, and special client projects
- Stay current on tax law changes and apply them to client strategies
- Support onboarding of new clients and expansion of firm services
Tax Manager Requirements:
- 7+ years of public accounting tax experience
- 2+ years overseeing or mentoring staff
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
- Strong experience with complex individual and business tax returns
- Proficiency with Excel, Word, and tax software
- Experience working in a small to mid-sized public accounting firm
- Strong client-facing and leadership skills
- CPA preferred or in progress
