Job Description
A mission-driven organization is seeking an accomplished Staff Accountant to support the month-end process for 6+ months. This is a mission-critical role responsible for guiding a $15M nonprofit through day to day general ledger, billing government entities for grants, oversight of AP, AR, and journal entries. The ideal candidate will bring nonprofit accounting experience. This role is built for someone who thrives in dynamic environments, communicates powerfully, and believes in work that changes lives.
Salary Range: $40 – $48 / Hour DOE
Staff Accountant Responsibilities:
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and accuracy of financial data
- Set up and manage cost centers across accounting and expense management systems
- Prepare monthly invoices, cost allocations, and related journal entries
- Own month-end and year-end close entries and reconciliations
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements
- Ensure ongoing grant compliance and accurate restricted fund tracking
- Participate in grant implementation meetings and communicate financial impact to stakeholders
- Prepare documentation for funders and new grant applications
- Maintain and reconcile fixed assets, prepaid expenses, leases, and right-of-use assets
- Track and reconcile net assets with and without donor restrictions
- Maintain weekly cash flow tracking and outstanding payments workbooks
- Review revenue data and ensure proper allocation, including Salesforce revenue accuracy
- Review accuracy of capital campaign transactions
- Support payroll off-cycle checks for review
- Answer accounting and finance questions by researching and interpreting data
- Update and distribute grant expense tracking tools monthly
- Collect schedules and supporting documentation requested by auditors
- Gather documentation for audit testing and record auditor-provided entries
- Ensure all audit adjustments and reclassifications are accurately reflected
- Confirm all reconciling items are posted prior to audit start
- Upload required documents to the designated tax management system
- Assist with gathering data and support for annual Form 990 filing
Staff Accountant Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business
- Understanding of nonprofit GAAP, grant management, restricted fund accounting, and capital project financing is a plus
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing Form 990
- Advanced communication skills with the ability to simplify complex financial information for diverse audiences
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Excel
- Experience with Salesforce and Monday.com preferred
