A growing and well-established construction and industrial services company in Portsmouth, Virginia is seeking a highly capable Controller to oversee all financial and administrative operations. This role serves as the primary leader for accounting and office functions, including payables, receivables, banking, deposits, payroll, general ledger, taxes, insurance, employee benefits, and office administration. The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands-on finance professional who can maintain strict compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements while effectively leading and mentoring a small office team.

Controller Responsibilities: 

• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, month-end close, reconciliations, and year-end reporting
• Maintain GAAP compliance and ensure compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements
• Manage payroll, withholding, employee benefits, and related HR functions
• Supervise and mentor accounting and administrative staff, monitoring workloads and maintaining key controls
• Coordinate publishing of management reports, inventory valuations, and predictive cashflow models
• Serve as the primary liaison with service providers, insurers, IT vendors, and software providers
• Maintain contracts, insurance policies, company handbook, and compliance documentation
• Assist with tax planning, accruals, Certificates of Insurance, and other operational duties as assigned
• Support company leadership in strategic financial planning and operational efficiency initiatives

Controller Requirements: 

• 3+ years as the top accounting or finance leader in a company
• Accounting or finance degree preferred, or 5+ years of commensurate experience with an unrelated degree
• Strong understanding and application of GAAP accounting and procedures
• Experience managing a team as an accounting manager, director of finance, controller, or CFO
• Proficient in Sage or similar ERP/accounting software (QuickBooks Enterprise, Timberline)
• Experience negotiating and managing insurance programs including health, workers’ comp, general liability, and vehicle coverage
• Ability to create predictive cashflow models and financial projections
