Job Description
This is a hands-on leadership role for a proven legal accounting professional who knows personal injury inside and out. A Dallas-based law firm is hiring a Controller to step in as the firm’s senior financial leader, replacing both the CFO and Controller functions with a single, highly capable operator. This person will own the day-to-day accounting, lead a team of 6 – 8, clean up and strengthen processes, manage complex PI and medical malpractice disbursements, and guide the firm through ongoing growth and system transition. The partners want autonomy, accountability, and execution, no micromanagement, no training wheels. This role is built for a confident, detail-driven CPA who thrives in fast-paced law firm environments, rolls up their sleeves, and can stabilize, modernize, and lead an accounting department with authority.
Controller Responsibilities:
- Own all accounting operations for a multi-entity personal injury and medical malpractice law firm
- Manage month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, banking, and financial reporting
- Oversee high-volume PI and med mal disbursements and case-related expense tracking
- Lead and develop a team of 6 – 8 accounting staff across AP, bookkeeping, and accounting management
- Partner closely with firm leadership and outside CPA firm
- Design, document, and implement accounting processes and internal controls
- Drive and support the transition from QuickBooks to Sage Intacct
- Manage accounting for 12 entities, including law firms, partner PCs, and real estate holdings
- Identify and resolve existing accounting issues with minimal direction
- Communicate clearly and confidently with partners, attorneys, and cross-functional leaders
Controller Requirements:
- CPA required, MBA also acceptable in limited cases with deep experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
- 5 – 7+ years of accounting experience within a personal injury law firm
- Mid-to-large law firm experience, 100+ employees strongly preferred
- Proven experience with PI contingency accounting and disbursements
- Prior team leadership and supervisory experience
- Advanced Excel skills, including formulas
- Experience leading or supporting accounting system transitions preferred
- Polished, professional communicator with strong leadership presence
Benefits:
- Annual bonus equal to one month’s salary
- Annual reviews and cost-of-living increases with performance-based upside
- 100% employer-paid medical insurance for the employee (PPO and HSA options)
- Dental and vision insurance with employer contribution
- Company-paid life insurance, short-term, and long-term disability
- 401(k) with 2% company match after one year
- Generous PTO that increases with tenure + 5 personal days
- Relocation assistance available
This role is ideal for a decisive, hands-on Controller with deep personal injury law firm experience who wants autonomy, stability, and the opportunity to make a real impact inside a growing, well-respected firm. Apply now!
