A thriving real estate firm in Raleigh, NC, is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Controller to oversee compliance and support financial operations across a diverse real estate portfolio. This high-impact role involves managing regulatory, lending, and tax requirements for LLCs, assisting with financial reporting, budgeting, treasury functions, and ensuring alignment with company policies and investor expectations. This is an ideal opportunity for a self-starter with deep experience in real estate and public accounting who thrives in a collaborative, family-first culture and is seeking a long-term role with potential to grow into a Controller-level position.
Assistant Controller Responsibilities:
- Oversee debt covenant compliance, escrow reimbursement tracking, and municipal regulatory requirements
- Manage commercial construction draws and lending institution interactions
- Support annual property and company budget preparation, including fee schedules and expense projections
- Maintain internal policies and monitor company debt obligations and fee arrangements
- Supervise and review internal compliance staff and functions
- Assist in year-end closing, tax preparation, and property-level reporting for financings and investment sales
- Partner with external CPAs on federal/state returns and investor financials
- Prepare ad hoc financial reports and assist with investor communications via the portal
- Manage and improve system platforms, including Yardi, Access, and Excel for budgeting, controls, and reporting
- Provide support for annual audits, internal controls, and compliance tracking
Assistant Controller Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting
- Experience in real estate accounting and Yardi
- Hands-on knowledge of partnership/LLC tax structure and multi-entity environments
- Familiarity with federal and multi-state tax compliance
- Treasury management experience
- Strong proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
- Exceptional attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work autonomously
- Proven ability to interact effectively with executives, investors, lenders, and auditors
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- CPA or an MBA is preferred
- Microsoft Access and Visual Basic skills is a plus
