Job Description

A retail chain in the Northeast is seeking a Director of Human Resources to oversee all aspects of HR operations. This role includes responsibility for employee relations, retention initiatives, payroll oversight, recruitment support, compliance, and training. It involves regular travel to field locations to build relationships, strengthen engagement, and ensure consistent implementation of organizational policies. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, results-driven leader who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment, can establish structure where needed, and is committed to improving processes and delivering measurable outcomes.

Salary Range: $90,000 – $110,000 / year DOE

Director of HR Responsibilities: 

  • Lead all HR functions including employee relations, compliance, payroll, training, and recruitment support
  • Develop and implement employee retention strategies to reduce turnover and strengthen engagement
  • Oversee payroll operations and ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations
  • Manage conflict resolution, workplace investigations, and documentation for employee issues
  • Coordinate and ensure completion of mandatory trainings, including those related to age-restricted products
  • Partner with hiring managers to attract and retain top talent for store, field, and corporate roles
  • Conduct regular visits to field locations to build relationships, understand operational needs, and enhance engagement
  • Create and refine HR policies, processes, and systems to align with business goals and growth initiatives

Director of HR Requirements: 

  • 8-10 years of experience in Human Resources with proven hands-on leadership
  • Open to experienced HR Managers ready to move into a Director role
  • Multi-site retail HR experience is essential
  • Strong background in employee retention initiatives
  • Willingness to travel to field locations regularly
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems and ADP is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree, SHRM certification, and supervisory experience is preferred but not required
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to balance strategic planning with day-to-day execution
