Job Description

A leading construction company with a strong reputation for integrity and quality is seeking a Construction Financial Controller to lead and oversee its accounting operations. This critical leadership role will manage the full spectrum of financial activities including payroll, job costing, revenue recognition, WIP analysis, and audit preparation. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, strategic thinker with deep experience in construction accounting and a strong ability to supervise teams and manage complex financial processes.

Salary Range: $100,000 – $120,000 / year DOE

Construction Financial Controller Responsibilities:

  • Oversee end-to-end accounting operations, including AP, AR, billing, and payroll for 300+ employees
  • Supervise and support a team, including direct reports across payroll, AP, and staff accounting
  • Manage payroll processes and ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws
  • Administer multi-entity state contracts and prepare quarterly payroll tax filings
  • Create and analyze Work in Progress schedules to track job performance and profitability
  • Prepare accrual entries, monthly and annual financial statements, and reconciliations
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state tax regulations, including excise tax filings
  • Lead the preparation and coordination of year-end audits
  • Review job cost reports and collaborate with project managers to resolve discrepancies
  • Drive operational efficiency and accuracy through process improvements and audit controls

Construction Financial Controller Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior supervisory experience with direct reports
  • Strong background in construction accounting and job costing
  • Proficient in quarterly payroll tax reporting for large employee bases
  • Multi-entity and multi-state payroll and accounting experience
  • Proficient with Excel and familiar with QuickBooks and Vista by Viewpoint
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, cash management, and compliance
  • Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to manage competing priorities
  • Prior experience in the construction industry is a plus
  • Strong accounting or CPA background is preferred
