A well-established and employee-owned general contractor in San Diego with a strong pipeline of commercial construction projects is seeking a Project Engineer or Senior Project Engineer to join the construction team, supporting a wide range of commercial new construction projects. This role will be responsible for managing procurement processes, document control, field coordination, cost control, change orders, and project closeout activities. The ideal candidate is passionate about construction, eager to grow, and thrives in a fast-paced, field-based environment. They are looking for candidates who are proactive, detail-oriented, and ready to take on increasing responsibility with the potential to grow into either a Project Manager or Superintendent role, depending on strengths and interests. 

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 / year DOE 

Project Engineer Responsibilities: 

• Assist with project administration and coordination of construction activities 
• Oversee procurement processes and ensure timely submittals by subcontractors 
• Maintain accurate document control, including meeting minutes and field implementation guides 
• Track progress using real-time field photos and helmet camera logs 
• Participate in field walkthroughs and manage punch lists with owners and architects 
• Support cost control activities and process change orders (for senior-level candidates) 
• Review models to ensure alignment with project specifications 
• Assemble project closeout documents 
• Troubleshoot construction issues within assigned scopes 
• Manage and mentor interns and junior staff as needed 
• Collaborate with field and office teams to ensure project goals are met 

Project Engineer Requirements: 

• Four-year degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or equivalent experience in a related field 
• Minimum 2 years of experience for Project Engineer, 4-5 years for Senior Project Engineer 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook 
• Basic understanding of scheduling software (Microsoft Project or P6) 
• Familiarity with project management platforms such as Procore, CMIC, Autodesk (required for senior-level candidates) 
• Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills 
• Ability to build effective relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders 
• Emotional maturity, reliability, and a proactive mindset 
• Field-based work availability, 5 days per week
