Job Description

Position Title: Field Service Technician

Industrial coding and marking equipment keeps production lines moving, and the technicians who service it carry real responsibility for customer uptime. This Field Service Technician role covers a Northern Illinois territory, with the largest customer site visited roughly once a week and significant work in Rockford, IL. A trip to Cedar Rapids, IA occurs about once a month, typically for one day. The position provides a company vehicle that may be used for personal as well as work purposes.

The technician joins a regional network of approximately five peers located within one to one and a half hours. Team members trade coverage and help one another when an evening assignment or urgent need arises. Training covers a specialized proprietary printing technology, and strong performance can lead to additional responsibilities and opportunities at other sites that use similar equipment. Work is field-based, with schedules typically set two to three weeks in advance and occasional access to an office about 1.5 hours away.

Salary Range: $68,000 – $73,000 / Year DOE

Field Service Technician Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair industrial inkjet and coding and marking equipment at customer locations, restoring printers to full operation
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on a regular schedule, including cleaning, proactive checks, and rotating units in and out of service, to reduce emergency service calls
  • Provide on-site service across a Northern Illinois territory, including weekly visits to the largest customer, regular work in Rockford, IL, and monthly travel to Cedar Rapids, IA
  • Analyze printer performance data from a cloud-based monitoring system and produce reports that identify problem areas and document resolutions
  • Track work orders and cases in the service system, documenting issues and outcomes accurately
  • Manage on-site parts and supplies inventory, ordering replacement components to minimize customer downtime
  • Communicate directly with customers, explaining technical issues clearly and keeping them informed
  • Coordinate coverage with nearby technicians and assist teammates when an assignment requires additional support

Field Service Technician Requirements

  • 4 to 6 years of relevant technical experience, or equivalent military technical experience
  • Strong electromechanical background, with working skill in diagnostics, troubleshooting, electronics, and software-driven systems
  • IT and networking skills sufficient to support laser systems and communications-heavy equipment
  • Professional, customer-facing presence, with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized, proactive, and accountable approach to managing a service territory, work orders, and parts inventory
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional overtime in response to customer needs, with infrequent weekend work
  • Willingness to travel within the territory, including recurring trips to Dakota, IL and Cedar Rapids, IA
  • Residence in or near the Rockford, IL area, or south toward Elgin, IL, is the ideal home base, but strong candidates living slightly outside this area will also be considered.
  • Experience with industrial printing, printer, or coding and marking equipment is preferred
  • Military technical background or industrial maintenance experience is preferred
  • Experience with inventory control and ordering replacement parts is preferred

Benefits

  • Company vehicle provided for both work and personal use
  • Overtime pay after 40 hours, with paid time beginning when the technician leaves home and ending upon return, and double time for Sunday work
  • Choice of two healthcare plans through BCBS of Illinois, a traditional PPO and a high deductible health plan, with benefits eligibility beginning the first of the month following the start date
  • 401(k) with a 100% employer match on the first 4% and a 50% match on the next 2%
  • Paid time off including 10 vacation days, 5 sick days, and 2 floating holidays
  • Specialized training on proprietary printing technology, with opportunities to take on added responsibility or support other sites over time

Candidates with a strong electromechanical background and the confidence to represent their work in front of customers should apply today to take on a territory of their own, backed by a company vehicle and a network of experienced peers.
