Job Description
Position Title: Legal Assistant
A growing workers’ compensation defense firm is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to support three attorneys with substantive, billable legal work. This role will handle drafting, document preparation, pre-trial conference statements, subpoenas, exhibits, petitions, case correspondence, and other litigation support while ensuring all work is accurately recorded for billing purposes.
The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of recent workers’ compensation defense experience, a Paralegal Certificate or Letter of Attestation, and hands-on experience with MerusCase and legal billing. This person will be personable, flexible, collaborative, and confident enough to work independently while identifying additional ways they can support the attorneys and broader team.
Salary Range: $67,000 – $83,000 / annually, DOE
Responsibilities
- Support up to three attorneys with substantive legal and administrative casework
- Draft and format correspondence, petitions, pre-trial conference statements, and other legal documents
- Prepare and organize exhibits, subpoena records, and assist with case documentation
- Review and action incoming mail items, including preparing initial drafts for attorney review
- Complete billable paralegal and legal assistant tasks while accurately recording time and billing activity
- Maintain organized electronic case files within a paperless environment
- Identify additional tasks and responsibilities that can be handled based on individual experience and expertise
- Collaborate with attorneys and support staff to keep matters moving efficiently
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of recent, consistent workers’ compensation defense experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant
- Paralegal Certificate or qualifying Letter of Attestation required
- Workers’ compensation defense experience representing employers required
- MerusCase experience required
- Previous legal billing experience required
- Ability to independently support up to three attorneys
- Strong drafting, formatting, filing, subpoena, and litigation support experience
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time management skills
- Personable and professional communication style with the ability to interact effectively with clients
- Flexible, collaborative, and team-oriented approach
