Job Description

A growing national distributor of machine tools is seeking a Traveling Service Engineer to join its service team based in Chicago, IL. This hands-on role is responsible for servicing laser cutting machines, press brakes, and other sheet metal processing equipment at client sites across the U.S. (and occasionally Canada). Weekly travel is required, with all travel expenses covered. While not on the road, the engineer will be onsite, maintaining in-house equipment. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, comfortable in a client-facing role, and brings 3+ years of relevant machine tool service experience. This position is best suited for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment, enjoys frequent travel, and wants to deepen their technical skills in a specialized manufacturing niche.

Salary Range: $72,000 – $90,000 year / DOE

Traveling Service Engineer Responsibilities: 

  • Travel nationwide (3–5 days/week) to install, troubleshoot, and repair machine tools at customer facilities
  • Provide technical training and post-service support to end users on-site
  • Maintain detailed service reports, expense records, and documentation for each job
  • Attend occasional training events to stay current on new product lines and technologies
  • Service and maintain in-house equipment when not traveling
  • Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction through timely and professional service
  • Communicate effectively with customers and internal teams regarding service issues
  • Use company-provided tools and follow safety protocols at all times

Traveling Service Engineer Requirements: 

  • 3–5 years of industry-specific experience servicing press brakes, laser cutting machines, or similar equipment
  • Prior experience working in sheet metal processing or machine tool environments
  • Must reside in the Chicago area and be available to work onsite when not traveling
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot complex equipment
  • Must be comfortable with heavy overnight travel across the U.S.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma is required, bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Team player with a flexible, can-do attitude
