Job Description

A leading general engineering contractor specializing in grading and asphalt paving is seeking a General Manager to oversee operations and lead the company into its next phase of growth. This is a hands-on leadership role designed for an individual with deep construction experience, particularly in civil and asphalt paving, who can drive operational excellence.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader from the civil construction or paving industry with a strategic mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to balance operational oversight with boots-on-the-ground leadership.

Salary Range: $250,000 – $275,000 / year DOE

General Manager Responsibilities:

  • Lead day-to-day operations and oversee project execution, cost control, and risk management
  • Support and train under the current President
  • Prepare and manage annual business plans, budgets, forecasts, and manpower planning
  • Provide oversight to Project Management, Estimating, and Superintendents
  • Implement and optimize operational systems, including new payroll, accounting, bidding, and fleet management software
  • Support recruitment, mentoring, performance reviews, and goal setting to strengthen the workforce
  • Maintain strong client relationships and represent the company at board meetings, industry events, and internal strategy sessions
  • Review and approve project estimates, sales, and G&A reports, and lead monthly/quarterly business reviews
  • Collaborate with leadership across the holding company to share best practices and drive growth

General Manager Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership in civil construction or asphalt paving
  • Deep understanding of construction materials, methods, scheduling, and risk management
  • Strong background in estimating, operations, and team leadership
  • Familiarity with Excel and Outlook required
  • Demonstrated success in client management and operational excellence
  • Clear communicator with strong negotiation and leadership skills
  • Able to thrive in a hands-on construction culture
  • Southern California market knowledge strongly preferred
